CHAPTER NINE

Tom arrived at the address Clarissa gave him, at the time she'd expressly told him to go at. He trusted that Clarissa wouldn't turn out to be another Trace, blundering through matchmaking at warp speed. The car pulled up to a newly renovated high rise building on a pretty tree lined block. It was much different from his neighborhood, with its increasingly high buildings and lack of anything green. God, he could even hear birds on this street. He would bet there was even a quaint little park within walking distance. Tom accepted that he was a little bit envious.

He spoke to the doorman as per the instructions, who expected him. The only part of plan he deviated from was stopping to buy a couple of éclairs from his favorite bakery since they were meant to be having coffee. He was suffering from that nervous excitement again. Even the elevator ride to the 10th floor was taking too long for his taste. Tom took a deep breath then knocked on her door.

“Come in. The door’s unlocked.” December called out from somewhere in the large apartment.

He was overwhelmed by the feeling of home when he stepped into the foyer. Deep browns and gold with splashes of rich purples and turquoise enveloped him like a welcoming embrace, inviting him to unwind on one of the plush-looking sectional sets or to pad around in heavy woolen socks on a cold, rainy day where pajamas were the only clothes that seemed appropriate. It was an odd feeling to feel, as if he'd waited all his life to get there and it hadn't disappointed.

“Okay I know you dislike Manischewitz, but it’s really the only wine I actually like drinking. I really hate the other stuff. It tastes a bit like hell- Oh. Tom. Hi.” She stopped in astonishment.

His lips quirked into a smile at the sight of her standing there with her hair braided in two raggedy pigtails.

“Hi, December.”

“You're not Clarissa.” She said, stupidly. She hated surprises. Especially manipulative surprises, and so close after Trace's, it was enough to overtake her excitement of having Tom right in front of her.

“No.” he replied, still smiling.

“But she told you to come over right?” Already knowing the answer, December sighed inwardly, accepting defeat. She would have threatened Clarissa with certain death, but she'd done that already and still she meddled. All she wanted was a quiet night in with her bestie.

“Yes.” His smile wilted slightly at how visibly displeased she was. He figured something like this might happen, regardless of Clarissa’s assurances, so he tried not to be offended. Tom knew all too well that playing with people like pawns tended to yield less than positive responses at times.

“Oh.”

“Indeed.”

She visibly shook herself from her stupor, and unconsciously started to unwind her sloppy plaits. A gorgeous man at your door, who wouldn't want to try to salvage their appearance?

“Since you're already here, come on in. Please.” Tom's tentative smile widened, in relief at her invitation.

“I feel like a vampire.
